Tinnitus Treatments - Online Survey

Writer's picture: Sally Jackson RHADSally Jackson RHAD

I am looking for people who are distressed by their tinnitus and have received treatment in the past or are looking for help now. If this is you, please click here and complete this 3 minute survey on treatment options:

Currently I run a one-to-one, two-hour intensive course (Active Habituation) designed to help people habituate to their tinnitus. The treatment quantifies the impact that tinnitus is having on a person's life, and teaches them how to become content and 'habituated'. In the habituated state, people do not notice their tinnitus.

Each individual course takes me about 4 hours of work altogether, and the patient experiences 2.5 hours of contact. It is very effective, but the cost/time mean that my reach is limited.

This survey looks at your views on paid tinnitus treatment, and what/how you would like to receive/benefit from it. I will take the results and use them when designing a fully-online version of Active Habituation. I will not be replacing the one-to-one sessions, I'll be adding a cheaper and more accessible option.

I also have the option of creating a forum / tinnitus support group. Currently I run one as a volunteer, on Facebook (link: here). It is popular (1100 members, no active bots!) but takes an inordinate amount of time to run it properly. Facebook's setup is difficult to navigate; people post the same questions and answers repeatedly because they don't see previous answers. A forum-style design with subtopics, hosted on this website, would make this peer support easier to navigate, but would need to come at a cost to the user. I created a Kofi 'tips jar' for the Facebook group, but it is indeed true that people don't pay for things that are given away - either that or they genuinely don't find the contributions helpful. If it's the latter, a contribution based model will fail, but we will know what is needed and what is not.

I would be grateful for your time in answering this survey, so I can create something that is genuinely accessible and reduces distress for tinnitus sufferers, while also being financially viable for the time spent on administrating it. In a landscape of spam, misinformation, gadgets that don't work, tongue electrocution and £60/month nonsense supplements, I want to engage in a useful and clinically significant (i.e. it works) way. Your comments and answers will help me design a better way to do that.

Thank you,

Sally
