Is it possible to habituate to chronic reactive tinnitus where one's tinnitus increases from noises of cars, fridge, outside environment?

Yes. Yes you can train yourself to react less, this is definitely within your control to do so.

Everyone’s tinnitus is reactive to some degree. We all have our own unique triggers, and also some triggers that are common across all sufferers. The fact that someone’s tinnitus triggers are e.g. fridge noise doesn’t mean that habituation isn’t possible.

What is happening on the inside is that the person has likely developed a kind of phobia of the sound, and gotten into a pattern of:

  1. triggering the tinnitus

  2. noticing the change in tinnitus (more prominent)

  3. focusing on the new level of tinnitus

Like any habit, it can be broken. It takes understanding, time and effort to rewire the response, but definitely possible, using the same methods as with anyone else.
